Main Tournament Recap - by Jean-Denis Hennebert
While you are reading these lines, the last round of the open tournament is being played.
Yesterday, in the 9th round, Sun Tengyu (7p) won again (over Kim Dohyup) to remain unbeaten. If this was rather expected, the feat of the day, Stanislaw Frejlak’s victory on Jia Gangli (2p) was more surprising. As a consequence, Jia Gangli is now not sure any longer to get the silver medal, or even the bronze meda.
These are more uncertain than ever:
Four players have 7 points: Yoon NamGi (7d, KR; last year winner of the “open” in Pisa), Jia Gangli (2p, CN), Liu Tanghao (6d, CN) and Stanislaw Frejlak (7d, PL).
Seven others trail them with 6 points, among whom the best SOS-holder are four Korean amateurs: Kim Dohyup, Cho Eunjin, Yong Min Lee and Kim Jung Min, followed by 3 European ones: Ioan Elian Grigoriu (5d, RO), Viktor Lin (6d, AT) and, rather unexpected, a genuine 4d, Simao Gonçalves, from…Portugal (a country counting very few go players).
We will have to wait the results of this 10th round to know the final standings.
Also note that Yann Flambard (“1-d”) of France went on with his winning streak (8 victories and 1 undecided game): yesterday, he got the scalp of another 5d ! (but the other super good performer of this tournament, Sathya Singh -2k, US lost (to a 2d) and remains with 7 wins).
Collecting the equipment
Today we are collecting all boards and stones to send back to Santa Claus's workshop!
Please follow the volunteers' instructions after your games to help us repack. Thank you!
Rapid tournament: final standings
After the 9 and last round, the final standings are known: behind “invincible” Sun Tengyu, who ends with a perfect 9/9, three players got 6 victories: Kim Dohyup (2nd), Jia Gangli (3rd) and Yoon Namgi (4th). Best player among the ones with 5 points, and best European: Vjecheslav Kajmin (5th).
Curious about the results? you can find them here!
