A recap of the current events in the European Championship
The European Championship has reached the semi-finals yesterday. Check the standings here. And two surprising competitors are still in the race: while last year in Pisa all semi-finalist were professionals, this year, amateur Lukas Podpera prevailed over Ali Jabarin, and so did amateur Stanislaw Frejlak against last year winner Pavol Lisy ! (taking his revenge of his defeat against him last year in Pisa, also in 1/4 finales). A more expected result was the victory of Ilya Shikshin over Viktor Lin, who still made a terrific performance.
Finally, the duel between the 2 pros, Mateusz Surma and Artem Kachanovskyi has turned in favor of the latter. While you are reading these lines, Lukas is affronting Ilya, and Stanislaw, Artem for a place in the final, which will be played on Sunday.
In the main tournament, one of the three Chinese professionals, Zhang Taiyu (1p) has finally been beaten... by one of his countryfellows, Sun Tengyu (7p). Sun Tengyu is the favorite for the final title: he is ranked # 72 in the world ranking, according to the famous website "goratings", ahead of champions like Gu Li, Cho U and Lee ChangHo, for instance ! Beside Sun Tengyu, the only other unbeaten top player up till now is the 3rd Chinese pro, Jian Ganglu (2p). Trailing them are three strong Korean amateurs and an American one with a 4/5 score.
The best European representatives are Remy Campagnie (FR, 6d) and Dmytro Jatsenko (UK, 5d) among a bunch of other European competitors with 3 victories but with a lesser SOS.
Only 6 European participants remained unbeaten after the first week : Xing Yuze (DE, 2d), Singh Sathya (US, 2k), Damaz Dani (FR, 4k), Doyle-Plikk Carol (IE, 10k), Prydatkevych Petro (UA, 15k) and Ebbesen Bjoern (DE, 20k). Congratulations to them !
